Sustainability Policy
Overview
Gelli Secret Escapes are dedicated to giving our guests the opportunity to make amazing memories whilst discovering new and exciting locations. When booking with us, you can make a meaningful contribution to ensuring that future generations can go on enjoying the areas you love to visit, as well as helping to support the local people in Wales.
It is important that we protect our environment whilst still enhancing and improving the quality of our guest experiences and therefore encourage year-round sustainable tourism. We fully support sustainability and encourage our guests to follow our lead and support us to maintain our planet and our future.
We want to highlight ourselves as a responsible choice for Welsh-based holidays and share our initiatives with our guests and partner with like-minded organisations. It is crucial that we always consider our impact on local areas as well as within the wider world.
As a business we put our social, ethical and environmental responsibility at the heart of everything we do, and we consider this to be one of Gelli Secret Escapes’ core values.
What we do
LED lighting – LED bulbs last 25 times longer than traditional light bulbs and are 80% more energy efficient, coverting 95% of energy used into light, compared to 5% in normal bulbs. We have therefore converted over reducing our power usage and eliminating the need for specialist disposal.
Appliances – All our appliances are at least A rated and some are A+ rated as they are eco-friendly and more cost effective than less rated appliances. We also use renewable energy tariffs that source electricity from wind and solar power. This benefits the property and supports the growth of the renewable energy sector.
Water – On average a person uses around 142L of water each day. To reduce wastage, we have replaced shower heads to water-efficient varieties, low-flow taps and dual flush toilets which use up to 6L compared to a standard flush using 13L.
All properties have compact dishwashers which are more water-efficient than handwashing using four times less water per place setting. Hand washing usually takes 60L of water and our dishwashers use only 9L of water.
Amenities- We use eco-friendly extras in our barn such as reusable bottles for shampoo, conditioner, body wash and hand wash rather than the “throw away” minis to reduce the amount of plastic waste per guest. We also use reusable hand wash in our pods.
Recycling- We encourage our guests to recycle by providing them with bins with clear instructions of what goes in each bin i.e. plastic and cans, cardboard and paper, glass, food only and general waste. We offer reusable shopping bags to discourage guests from buying single-use plastic bags when shopping.
We recycle all our towels offering hot tub towels which were “good” towels but have over time been recycled for use outside when using the hot tubs.
Heating – We have extra thick curtains and thick duvets to reduce the need to increase the heating during their stay. We have ambient heat through underfloor heating which reduces the need for radiators.
Eco-friendly activities – We encourage our guests to shop local building the economy of the local community and independent shops in the area. We have walks available direct from the property so there is no need for guests to use their cars to visit some local attractions.
